Southwold-Sun and Surf

The heather on the heath

We began our journey to Southwold with a delightful stop on Dunwich Heath. The morning was sunny and warm and we were amazed by the colours produced by the heather. We went for a short walk accompanied by the sweet honeyed smell of the heath. On arriving in Southwold we parked by the boating lake and started our visit with a walk on the pier. We were both happily surprised how lovely it was. No tacky shops selling all that paraphernalia you normally associate with English holiday towns. It was really pleasant and after a walk to the end of the pier we returned and sat enjoying a morning coffee. We were also in a great spot to watch the water clock reveal it's 'delights' on the half hour! The weather continued warm and sunny so we strolled along the promenade looking at the multi-coloured beach huts and watching the surf. Walking up into the town brought more delights. Unspoilt streets with really interesting bars, cafes and shops. We popped into the Serena Gallery looked at some local art work and bought the local ale in the Adnams Shop. Finally it was time for a lunchtime pint at the Lord Nelson, a pub with loads of atmosphere.Walking back along the front we found the sailors reading rooms. Literally one room full of memorabilia from model boats, photographs and personal memento's. Our trip finished at the traditional tearooms by the boating lake.A fantastic day and a place we will visit again.
Just perfick!

  1. Excellent David. A real super effort. I really like the fact that you can enlarge the photos by double clicking. For that reason I'm sorry that I can't add photos as we go along, because they add so much to the blog experience! Still, never mind.

I think you'll be getting my first holiday blog by Saturday. Keep you posted.
